Welcome to Lacona, Iowa Lacona is a community of warm, caring people nestled in southeastern Warren County about thirty-five miles south of Des Moines. The approximately 350 residents quickly and generously join forces to support the needs of the community; from purchasing new playground equipment, to restoring an historic log cabin, to coaching the youth ball teams. The volunteer fire/rescue unit is well staffed and supported by the residents of the town and surrounding area. The relatively new city hall also houses a library that provides a variety of services and programs for all ages, including Internet access and story times.
South Central Coop, other local businesses, and the school district provide jobs locally. The town is centrally located among three larger county seat towns that provide an easy commute for workers at Hy-Vee warehouse and other jobs. Several also drive to Des Moines for employment.
The Intermediate Center of the Southeast Warren School District is in Lacona. A new school was built in 1999. There are five churches in town to serve the religious needs of the people.Various organizations are also active in the community: 4-H, American Legion, Fire Department, Park Committee, and a Community Group which coordinates projects such as the annual Lacona Celebration usually held in August.
